No Excuses Series: The Elections

Well thankfully the elections are over at least in most states, I hear they won’t have final results on some races until after thanksgiving.

It’s funny I have always been put off by the two party system, never really understanding how if you are running as a republican you have to embrace their entire plate of ideals and of course the same holds true if you are running on the democratic ticket. That is to say if you believe in lower taxes and less government you also MUST believe in pro life? If you believe in Obama’s new health care plan you also MUST legalize marijuana?

I am not here to share my political views only to say “make up your own damn minds”! Don’t fall into the trap of saying I am a democrat so these are my beliefs or I am a republican so therefore this is where I stand. Do you ever listen to these TV or radio personalities who get up on a soap box and exclaim the virtues of their party as if they have never made a wrong move? I think they would be so much more influential if they would talk about their faults and mistakes as well as their virtues.

To my mind’s eye the more thoughtful and realistic someone is the more influential they are…you know the saying the people that yell the loudest usually have the least to say. That was never truer than in politics. Take California, Meg Whitman just spent 160 million dollars on her campaign and what did it buy her…retirement. On a personal level I must say my respect level dipped for her a bit after she led a very successful company, EBAY to profits never seen before. She was on top of the world. Then she turns around and runs for governor, a position that no matter how good you are will have no long term effect on mankind except to tell her grand kids she was Governor. Can you imagine if she would have taken that ungodly sum and donated it to Cancer research, or education or even starting a business and help create jobs? There are two types of people in this world, the ones that “feed others” and the ones that “feed their own ego”. Politicians for the most part are the latter….why else would they spend so much money telling you how great they are?
